Protection for private tenants
New legislation will establish a National Register for Landlords, while a tougher regulatory regime will help track down rogue letting and managing agents and drive them out of the industry, under a package of measures introduced by the Department for Communities & Local Govt to give more practical help and protection for tenants in privately rented houses.
The measures, which follow on from the Rugg Review 2008, also include plans to strengthen the hands of tenants should they face a dispute by introducing a requirement for written agreements in all tenancies. Tenancy rights will be extended to students and others living in shared homes on short term lets.
Other elements in the package include a new housing hotline offering free help and advice to private tenants and a 'tripadvisor' style, word-of-mouth website comparing landlords. The DcLG is also collaborating with local authorities across England to encourage best practice in the way they work with the best landlords and agents in their areas.
