Builders liability insurance
Builders liability insurance holders have been warned not to use telehandlers if the right-hand side window is missing or broken, following a recent fatal accident.
The safety notice from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) came after a 36-year-old man was killed whilst operating a telehandler machine in Scotland recently.
An investigation revealed that he was leaning through the broken right-side window when the descending boom crushed him to death.
The HSE revealed that it is the third similar fatal accident in the last seven years, with the side window designed to act as a guard to prevent operators having access to the boom.
"If this side glass screen is broken or missing the machine should be removed from use until it has been replaced. Users are also reminded of the importance of carrying out daily checks of the condition of their trucks," the notice added.
The dangers of telehandlers were highlighted to builders liability insurance holders recently after Meldrum Construction was fined £4,500 after a machine overturned.
